Catholics in Dramas

Every once in awhile, you'll see some people in TV Dramas mention that they are/were Catholic in some of the dialogs. Here are just a few examples.
Lost: Mr. Eko in Lost was a Catholic in childhood, but was allowed to be taken by some mercenary rebels at a young age to save his brother's life. Among these people, he ended up becoming a drug runner and murder. His brother however became a priest. On the island, Mr. Eko decides to tell people he is a priest, although he obviously is not.
CSI: Grissom from CSI was Catholic at some point and recognized some ligature marks on a neck as matching those of rosary beads, he really doesn't follow his childhood faith anymore, seemingly because he mostlikely has fallen into the trap that science and religion can't co-exist.
I was thinking about these events because I was watching the lastest episode of Law & Order: SVU and Detective Stabler is Catholic. Now, I know he attended his son's Confirmation before, but I didn't get to catch that episode. Maybe someone can enlighten me on what happened in that one. He and his wife are either separated or divorced, which still happens to the most devout, but is pretty sad. He visited his parish priest (I think his name is Fr. Dennis) in some advice for his current case in investigating a murder of a homosexual prostitute and an outspoken protestant minister against homosexuality. When he was with the minister at the New Souls church trying to get the minister to confess, it kind of surprised me that he made the sign of the cross and dropped to his knees, but even more surprising was that he just rattled off the whole Act of Contrition. I was surprised, because most dramas don't have the decency or courage to make their Catholic main characters devout. I'm not suggesting that Det. Stabler should be canonized or anything, but I usually have to read that prayer off a card when I'm in the confessional or at least go over it before I go. Also, that prayer made sense in that context and the priest was portrayed fairly normally and not stuck in the fifties or stuck up. It was well done.
